nVidia GeForce GTX 260 Reviews

Summary of review published by PC Magazine — September, 2008

Just the sheer amount of transistors present in the nVidia GTX 200 GPU is enough to give you an idea on just how big cards carrying this chip will be. We are talking about 1.4 billion transistors here. There are two products using the GTX 200 chip currently: GeForce GTX 280 and the GeForce GTX 260 - both don’t come cheap. Current market price for the GTX 280 card is $650 and $400 for the GTX 260 cards - too high for single-GPU cards since these prices are usually reserved for dual-GPU cards. Trying to determine whether the cards are worth the tags they have, the reviewer took several benchmark tests. Using 3DMark06 and Vantage, the reviewer stated that the GTX 280 provided excellent raw shader computational power, though it's not surprising given its price range. For Crysis, benchmark results show that even the more expensive dual-GPU cards cannot keep up with the much cheaper GeForce GTX 260 - a fair indication nVidia got the recipe right for the newer cards. Summing it up, the reviewer noted that while the GeForce GTX 280 is much faster and more impressive than its cheaper counterpart, the GeForce GTX 260 delivers a lot more bang for the buck, though it's still quite expensive.
Pros:
-fastest in its class
-efficient power use
Cons:
-quite expensive
-dual-GPUs can outstrip it in certain areas
