eBookwise 1150 Reviews

Summary of review published by Computing Unplugged — July, 2007

Take your library with you, but on which eBook reader?

A few years ago, eBooks were all the rage. We dreamed of a paperless, eco-friendly society, but eBooks never really took off. The reviewer surmises that this may be because of a sense of nostalgia with paperbacks, that people have a hard time letting go. He did try what was an inexpensive option: the eBookwise 1150, which sold for $110. It takes a bit of getting used to, but not difficult to fall in love with. The eBookwise 1150 weighs about a pound and the 8mb flash memory on-board holds four to six eBooks. With an optional 64mb SmartMedia card, it will hold about 10 selections. You can purchase eBooks online, or load your own documents in plain text, Rich Text format, Microsoft Word documents, HTML, and Rocket eBook Editions. A drawback of the eBookwise 1150 is that it doesn’t support Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Reader eBooks. The past few months have seen the launch of Electronic Paper Displays (EPD). Like black ink on white paper, these displays are reflective and easy to read in bright sunlight or low light conditions, while being readable from any angle. However, at their current price range of $350 - $699, trying one involves a lot of thought.
