Vivitar Macro Focusing Teleconverter 2x Reviews

Summary of review published by Connected Photographer — June, 2007

Nature is filled with small details of amazing complexity. These are difficult to see with the naked eye, but with the help of macro photography one can learn to appreciate these miniature treasures. One of the better macro lenses is the Vivitar 2x Macro Focusing Teleconverter. It is like an extension tube but with glass, and so it’s heavier. Mounted between the SLR camera body and the lens, it effectively moves the back of the lens further away from the sensor or film plane. The idea behind it is much like a projector, in that the further you move it away from the display area, the larger the image gets. It’s simple, yet efficient. The drawback is that less light reaches the film/sensor, so the shutter speed drops, and longer exposure times are needed. Note that this particular unit is no longer in production, so you may have to search online auction sites, where it can be had for $40-$60. Teleconverters, in general, can be cheap to moderately expensive depending on its features. The cheapest manual focus (MF) versions are about $20, while the full auto-focus (AF) versions made by Kenko will run $130 or more for a new set.
