The Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-S1001X is the solution for the budding entrepreneur who wants to have a business laptop without breaking the bank. It comes in a gray exterior and weighs 4.6 pounds. The 13-inch widescreen is glossy and has only one available resolution: 1,280-by-800. The reviewer noted that the keyboard offered a lot of flex that produced some bounce, especially the left part. It also lacks quick-launch buttons or any keys that control volume or movie playback. The U400 offers the bare essentials when it comes to ports: 3 USB ports and a FireWire port. A fingerprint reader and a built-in dual-layer DVD burner are also present. What it lacks in design, it makes up in performance. The 2.1-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor allowed it to get an overall SYSmark 2007 Preview score of 106. It provided high-marks on the video-encoding and Photoshop CS3 tests. The six-cell battery powered the notebook for 3 hours 28 minutes on MobileMark 2007. It also comes in a “no bloatware” configuration. If you can stand the unpleasant typing experience and the bare design, the Toshiba Satellite Pro U400-S1001X is a viable choice for a business notebook.
Pros:
-cheap
-comes with no bloatware configuration
-comes with a “Penryn” chip
-good battery endurance
Cons:
-mediocre typing experience
-not very configurable
-doesn’t come with 2GB RAM
