Toshiba Portege R500-S5007V Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — October, 2008

The Portégé R500 from Toshiba is no longer the company’s lightest 12-inch notebook with an integrated optical drive. The newest iteration of the system, the Portégé R500-S5007V weighs only 2.2 pounds - 2 ounces lighter than its predecessor. The keyboard is spill-resistant, responsive and offers plenty of space for comfortable touch-typing. The touchpad is large enough and a fingerprint reader that resides between two mushy mouse buttons. Videos on the widescreen 12.1-inch (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) display looked decent, though it offered narrow viewing angles. Benchmark scores are on the low side, getting nearly 600 points below the 2,845 ultraportable average, though the reviewer noted that multitasking isn’t a problem. Graphics test score is more than 600 points lower than the category average of 1,600. Wireless throughput from the 802.11a/g/n radio was strong, scoring 19.6 Mbps and 18.5 Mbps at 15 and 50 feet, respectively. The six-cell battery provided enough juice to power the system for 5 hours and 28 minutes - just 2 minutes shy of the average. While it does offer durability and a somewhat smooth performance, not to mention the portability, the reviewer recommends waiting for the newer Portégé R600-S4202 to get a bigger bang for your buck.
Pros:
-lightweight
-good performance
-plenty of durability and security options
Cons:
-narrow viewing angles
-SSD slow
-unit’s underside gets hot
