Smartparts decided to integrate photo printing capability into your usual digital photo frame and came up with the SP8PRT Digital Picture Frame and Printer. It has a thermal-dye printer mounted on its back that can also serve as the frame’s stand. The frame can show pictures, play movies and sounds from a USB key, a memory card or from the internal 120MB flash memory. A set of control buttons on the side of the printer lets you control which source the frame will be accessing and other options as well. Setup consists of simply sliding the print pack into the printer and plugging the power cord. The LCD provides bright images with good color quality. It also has a wide range of viewing angles. Printing is limited to 4-by-6-inch photos. The reviewer noted that the SP8PRT has a print speed of 60 seconds per photo. It doesn’t print on flat individual sheets but on a tightly wound continuous roll, giving photos a noticeable curl. Quality is similar to pictures processed in local drugstores or photo shops. The reviewer stated that another potential issue could be the running cost, fetching as much as a dollar for every four prints. Nonetheless, if you are in the market for a photo frame that prints and print cost isn’t an issue, the SP8PRT Digital Picture Frame and Printer is a good option.
