Sling Media SlingCatcher Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — December, 2008

It took 2 years for Sling Media to release the newest member of its set-top box, the Sling Media SlingCatcher. The SlingCatcher is a sleek black box with a design that’s minimalist. You have two LED indicators for power and network connectivity at the front. On the box itself you’d find a bevy of input connections, including HDMI, component, composite, and S-Video. A remote control riddled with buttons is included. The reviewer noted that it took 20 minutes to get the SlingCatcher up and running. Playing content directly from a USB drive won’t need additional setup, though you’d need to enter your account details at Sling.com to access the Slingbox remotely. The best feature of the SlingCatcher is the SlingProjector that lets you project either your whole screen or just a window. The reviewer stated that overall video quality was good, though it varies based on content source. While it is possible to stream DVD from a notebook to the TV, there was a lot of video and audio skipping. The SlingCatcher supports a host of video and audio formats. Accessing the SlingCatcher remotely is a simple process and this makes it an ideal solution for users constantly on the go. It may cost you some serious cash, but if you are in the market for a versatile set-top box, the Sling Media SlingCatcher is the product to get.
Pros:
-easy to setup
-no lock into specific content providers
-can access SlingBox remotely

Cons:
-no Wi-Fi
-doesn’t support album art
-pricey
