Samson Zoom H2 Audio Recorder Reviews

Summary of review published by DV Magazine — May, 2008 (page 20)

No event or venue is ever the same when it comes to audio recording. Each one presents its own challenges and limitations. While others rely on standalone Minidiscs or MP3 recorders, another solution is the Zoom H2 Audio Recorder. The Zoom H2 comes with the standard package which includes an upgradable 512MB SD Card and a mini-to-RCA cable. It’s small and lightweight enough to be handheld or it can be easily mounted upright. It is quite versatile, allowing users to record compressed and uncompressed audio in different formats and frequency. Aside from the 1/8 mike and line inputs, the H2 carries an onboard microphone. The USB cable turns the H2 into a USB microphone input for your applications. There is a toggle that controls the Gain in the outside the unit and a “Key Hold” setting will lock it. Performance wise, the reviewer noted that the Zoom H2 takes 5-10 seconds to boot. Also, there is no way to record in mono if only for storage purposes. However, for something that’s half the price of other brands and double the number of mics, the Zoom H2 is truly an affordable option.
Pros:
-Inexpensive
-Light
-Good external controls
-Cheap storage
-Numerous format options
Cons:
-Plastic case
-No way to record in mono only
-Slow boot times
-Consumes AA batteries voraciously
