SageTV HD Media Extender STX-HD100 Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — April, 2008

It may not be as sleek as the Apple TV, nor does it have the DVR function of Archos, but the SageTV HD Media Extender STX-HD100 is a serious contender in the arena of media extenders. Getting the unit connected is quite simple, as there are ports for all kinds of television. However, more work is needed to get it fully running. One of the main drawbacks of the STX-HD100 is the lack of Wi-Fi support. This means that it should be physically connected to your router. As for the performance of the device, the reviewer stated that it handled every file they have tried. Viewing videos at 720p was no problem. MP3 playback and even recorded media played smoothly. You can watch and listen without fear that the STX-HD100 locking your videos or music with DRM protection. However, while the Apple TV and Archos offer storage, the STX-HD100 doesn’t. The relatively complex remote control would sometimes lag behind clicks, and then suddenly catch up. Despite these trade-offs, the flexibility offered by the STX-HD100 as well as the lack of DRM restrictions makes it a worthy competitor.
Pros:
-No DRM restrictions
-Streams live TV from PC
-Intuitive
-Smooth playback of HD videos
Cons:
-No Wi-Fi
-No storage option
-Complex remote control
