Despite being taken out of Best Buy’s shelves, SMC still continues to churn out quality small-network products such as the latest wireless-n home router, the SMC WGBR14-N Barricade N. It comes in a basic packaging: a rectangular silver box with three directionally adjustable antennas. At the back of the unit are four Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired devices on your LAN and one Internet port for your broadband modem. At the side is a USB port for print serving. Instead of the usual setup wizard, SMC decided to go the paper route. Using the Quick Installation Guide and following the four steps, the router is up and running. To tweak the configuration, you can access the browser-based management utility built into the router. The router supports SPI firewall, virtual server and parental controls, though it doesn't support 5-GHz operation. Using the jPerf performance test, the reviewer stated that the Barricade managed an average throughput of only 87 Mbps at optimal range. Adding an 802.11g client dropped it even further to 57 Mbps at the same distance. On the other hand, it worked well at long distances, providing 32-Mbps signal even at 180 feet. If range of signals and budget are top priorities, then the SMC Barricade is a good solution.
Pros:
-good price
-excellent range
-supports WPS
-lifetime warranty
Cons:
-slow
-no 5-GHz support
