RIM finally obliged clamshell fans and produced a smart phone just for them. The Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220 has the same features Blackberry fans have come to know and love. It weighs 3.6 ounces and offers a smaller footprint than the Blackberry Pearl 8210. As for looks, it has a glossy black exterior and the keyboard has a matte black finish. The familiar trackball is above the keyboard. The Pearl Flip has an external 160 x 128-pixel resolution display, and a bright and crisp 320 x 240-pixel internal display. The Pearl Flip’s SureType keypad is both flatter and smoother than the original Pearl’s keyboard. Inside, it runs RIM’s new BlackBerry OS 4.6.0.1. The reviewer noted that the device was a bit sluggish while multiple apps were running. Web browsing is through T-Mobile’s EDGE network and 802.11 b/g wireless radio, though Wi-Fi performance is inconsistent. Just like previous BlackBerry models, the Pearl Flip supports multiple e-mail accounts, including POP3 and IMAP4, among others. For multimedia mavens, it supports a host of video and audio formats, with a microSDHC slot for additional storage. Call quality is excellent both indoors and outdoors. The Pearl Flip is rated for 4 hours of talk time. Overall, flip phone and Pearl fans will find a lot to love in BlackBerry’s Pearl Flip 8220.
