Pure Digital Flip Mino Reviews
Summary of review published by PC Magazine — September, 2008
When Pure Digital's original Flip Video was released, it totally changed the camcorder arena, giving birth to the whole new concept of YouTube camcorder. This time around, Pure Digital is releasing the Flip’s latest successor named Mino. A single look and you’ll see the effort that Pure Digital put into the Mino to make it more aesthetically appealing. It's now shorter, narrower, and is only half as thick as its predecessor. With a weight of only 3.3 ounces, it's 1.9 ounces lighter than the Flip Ultra. It still has the spring-loaded USB arm and the cramped 1.5-inch LCD. It features a 2GB built-in memory which is good for about an hour of recording time. The tactile keys are replaced with touch controls that give the Mino an even slicker appearance. However, the lack of tactile feedback can lead to accidental feature triggering. The reviewer noted that video quality seems to have deteriorated with the Mino despite having identical optical specs. Videos taken with the camera resulted in choppy and often noisy picture quality. On the other hand, the Mino's speakers are capable of louder playback than the Ultra's. While it does offer several improvements, the reviewer stated that the Pure Digital Flip Mino feels like a mere repackaging of its predecessor in a nicer-looking skin, which hardly justifies the big price bump.
Pros:
-small
-light
-comes with a rechargeable battery
-better design
Cons:
-poor image and audio quality
-too small LCD
-too big price increase

The highly successful Flip Video Ultra gets even better with the release of Pure Digital Flip Mino. Compared to its predecessor, the Mino is smaller and lighter, weighing in at only 3.3 ounces. It still has the 1.5-inch, glare-free LCD, a retractable USB connector, TV output, and a tripod connector. Deviating from the usual push buttons, the Mino features flat, touch-sensitive controls. The reviewer noted that the display, while it’s viewable in but the harshest lighting, gets easily scratched. The Mino’s performance almost matched that of the Ultra. There are some minute differences, however, such as a better sound quality thanks to the new omni-directional mic. The 640 x 480 video produced by the Mino is YouTube ready and uploading it is a cinch with the bundled software. It also comes with editing tools, but the reviewer noted that the very limited functions produce crude results. Unlike its predecessors, the Mino comes with a battery that recharges when connected to a notebook’s USB port. If you are looking for a cheap and good-looking pocket camcorder that provides great video quality, the Pure Digital Flip Mino is not a bad idea.
Pros:
-Sleek design
-Improved playback functions
-Rechargeable battery
-Easy upload to sharing sites
Cons:
-No still-photo feature
-No optical zoom
-LCD easily gets scratched
