Pharos Drive GPS 250 Reviews

Summary of review published by PC Magazine — May, 2008

Compared to similar GPS devices, the Pharos Drive GPS 250 is inexpensive with its $299.99 price tag. But don’t think low price equals cheap, as this entry level unit has features that are found in much higher priced personal navigators. First off, it has a 4.3-inch screen, a top-notch satellite receiver, and text-to-speech functionality. The main menu is simple with only three icons. By choosing the Go icon, you’ll be able to input your destination, and the device will then direct you to the quickest route towards it. Although the GPS 250 doesn’t have a media player and a Bluetooth phone interface, it does tell you the street names - something that other navigators can’t do. The downside with it is that support is limited to only a few spoken languages, and the outdated database contains a mere 1 million points of interest from the US, including Hawaii and Alaska, and Canada. This is fewer compared to other GPS navigators. The reviewer recommends the Pharos Drive GPS 250 for those who are looking for a cheap, simple GPS navigator.
Pros:
-Large display
-SiRFstarIII receiver
-Voice to speech function
-User friendly interface
Cons:
-Outdated database
-Limited language support

Priced at $299, the Pharos Drive GPS 250 can be considered as a budget priced GPS unit. It does give you features rarely found on GPS units of that price range: a 4.3-inch screen and street name pronunciation. The bad part? The reviewer said that even with that screen space, it is poorly used by the unit. Also, with only 1.2 million POIs, it pales against other units with the same price range. Though it does not have extras such as Bluetooth, a media player, and live traffic, it does give you the nifty ability to set what roads to avoid. When it comes to the actual navigation, the reviewer wasn’t thrilled: from the not-so-responsive touch screen to the slow route calculations. Directions given aren’t always accurate either, and rerouting will commence seconds later. The reviewer stated that rerouting times were on par with other units. If you are looking for a midrange GPS unit with a large screen to boot, then the Drive GPS 250 may just be for you.
Pros:
-Large screen
-Midrange price
-Street name pronunciation
Cons:
-Screen space wasted
-Low amount of POIs
-Touchscreen slow to respond
-Slow route calculations
