A quick look at the Panasonic Toughbook 30 and you’ll know this is one seriously rugged notebook. Appropriately named, the Toughbook 30 is housed in a sturdy silver and black magnesium alloy chassis with a built-in, briefcase-type handle. Underneath the lid is a bright, 13.3-inch display with touchscreen capabilities. The keyboard is spaced just right and provides good response. However, the reviewer noted that the touchpad controller is a bit too small. To test how tough the Toughbook is, the reviewer dropped it from 36 inches onto a carpeted office floor thrice without incident. Every port and slot, including the power jack, is protected by a gasket-lined cover. Aside from physical protection, it protects your data with TPM circuitry, a Computrace theft-protection agent, a biometric fingerprint scanner, and a Smart Card reader. While benchmark scores are below average, the Toughbook 30 still has enough power for running office applications. The battery provided power for an impressive 6 hours and 51 minutes during tests. Wireless throughput scores weren’t bad either, providing 20.7 Mbps and 18.1 Mbps at 15 and 50 feet respectively. While the high price may seem pretty steep, if durability is the primary issue, it’s hard to find something more durable than the Panasonic Toughbook 30.
Pros:
-military grade durability
-touchscreen display
-excellent battery endurance
-good wireless range
Cons:
-mediocre graphics
-heavy
-no optical drive
