Panasonic adds a new member to its line of HDTVs with the 46-inch 1080p TH-46PZ85U Viera. The TH-46PZ85U comes in Panasonic's traditional glossy black bezel that measures 3 inches wide on the sides and 2 inches wide along the top. The two 10w speakers offer a pleasing contrast with no distortion at maximum volumes. The remote control comes in a baton shape for a comfortable and secure grip. At the back of the set is the main port panel. HD-compatible inputs include two HDMI, two components, VGA, and an RF input that feeds a NTSC/Clear QAM/ATSC tuner. All the HDMI ports are compatible with 1080p60 and 1080p24 input. 1080i/p video materials are displayed with exceptionally crisp and detailed pictures. The default picture-size mode eliminates image overscan. It offers wide viewing angles, though brightly lit environment might prove to be too much for the set’s antireflective screen surface. The TH-46PZ85U can display the whole gamut of colors. The black level is at an impressive 0.07 cd/m2 versus previous generation’s 0.15 cd/m2. HD video performance is solid though hardly stellar. Playing 24p material encoded into the 1080i format showed some loss of detail. For those in the market for a TV that balances price, features and performance, the Panasonic TH-46PZ85U is a good choice.
