Coming into the hybrid touch-button interface digital camera scene is Panasonic with the FX500. It weighs 5.5 ounces and encased in a brushed-metal body that not only looks elegant but can also take a bit of abuse inside your bag without being scratched. Because of the touchscreen feature, buttons around the camera’s body are at a minimal. The FX500 has a 3-inch touchscreen display that is bright enough even on a sunny day. The reviewer stated that the touchscreen is an overall success, thanks to the large enough on-screen icons as well as the included small stylus for touch input. The FX500 is equipped with the Intelligent Auto Mode that adjusts setting automatically depending on the shooting conditions. The image quality, however, is less than spectacular. The reviewer stated that images consistently looked too dark and appeared underexposed. Speed is on the slow side, taking 4 seconds to boot up and be ready for consecutive shots, and it also takes 4 seconds between shots. Battery life was impressive, taking several days and more than a hundred photos before finally needing a charge. While it does have the most intuitive touchscreen, the reviewer can’t recommend the FX500 due to its mediocre image quality despite the high technical specs.
