Despite struggling with its OS, Palm still finds the time to expand its Treo series with the new Treo 800w. It has a well-balanced design and rubbery grip. The 800w measures 4.4 by 2.2 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.0 ounces. It comes with a 2.5-inch display and an improved resolution of 320 by 320 pixels. The reviewer noted that the touch screen on the 800w is picky and the included stylus feels cheap. Call quality is above average, providing clear and punchy reception on both ends. Reception is also good; the 800w is capable of picking up even weak EV-DO data signals. It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional out of the box, though the reviewer stated that the hardware doesn’t have the necessary horsepower for the software, resulting in a sluggish user interface. It comes with built-in Microsoft Exchange and Outlook compatibility, POP and IMAP e-mail client support, and direct push e-mail capability, making it a business-oriented messaging phone. The 800w also includes GPS and Wi-Fi radios that are powered by TeleNav. Multimedia fans might be disappointed, as video playback showed intermittent jitters and dropped frames. The bundled earbuds sound cheap and the microUSB connector makes upgrading difficult. Battery life is equally frustrating, lasting just 3 hours and 21 minutes. Still, the Treo 800w is a decent business handset for Microsoft-centered enterprise networks.
