Palm LifeDrive Reviews

Summary of review published by Handheld Computing — September, 2005 (page 55)

Solidly built, pretty interface and a 4GB microdrive give the LifeDrive an impressive start, along with its 480 x 320, 64 K color display, but then harsh realities start crowding in. Battery life, even considering the capable 1660 mAh Li-ion pack is barely adequate and requires daily charging like a full-fledged PocketPC. The aging PalmOS could have used a freshening-up, as multitasking is still a stretch. Wireless and Bluetooth were found by the reviewer to be serviceable at best. The use of the high-capacity LifeDrive 4GB microdrive entails less caching in RAM and more read/write to the drive which means occasional stutters as the drive spins up and down. Application software is adequate, with the Blazer web browser and Versa mail as easy to use as ever, but the LifeDrive bundles only a limited edition of the PocketTunes software, requiring a fee to upgrade to the full version, and even then won't play Apple AAC files, whether protected or not. MS Office documents display quickly and easily however, making a strong point in LifeDrive's favor. Hardware is based on the Intel XScale processor at 416 MHz running the PalmOS 5.4 and comes with Bluetooth 1.1 and WiFi 802.11b.
Pros:
-Huge 4GB hard drive
-Bright, clear screen
-Elegant design
Cons:
-Hard drive has to spin up to access
-Spotty WiFi and Bluetooth
-Out of date PalmOS
-Inordinately long startup time
