PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 6 Reviews

Summary of review published by PC Magazine — October, 2008

Despite undergoing a major release, the Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 6 (SDAV6) doesn’t come with the new features you’d normally expect. Instead, PC Tools decided to concentrate on improving the hidden features, making the app better at detecting threat variants without hogging the system’s resources. Installing SDAV6 will take as much as 10 or 15 minutes because the signature database isn't included in the installer. The reviewer used a resource-poor malware-infested virtual machine to test the software. After tweaking the options, scanning took nearly an hour and required a reboot to complete its cleanup. SDAV6 was able to detect all of the malware samples and was able to remove all but one of them, getting a score of 9.8 out of 10. Against commercial keyloggers, the SDAV6 isn’t very effective, scoring only 7.3 of 10. Aside from detection and clean-up, it also offers a set of protections called IntelliGuards to detect and prevent malware infestation at many different levels. One such guard is the Behavior Guard that watches every process and looks for patterns of behavior that indicate a malicious program. Overall, the Spyware Doctor’s fast scanning time and powerful protection make it a solid anti-malware solution software.
Pros:
-was able to detect all test malware
-detected keylogger sample
-prevented running a keylogger on a clean system
Cons:
-lengthy installation
-real-time protection allowed malware installation but prevented it from running
