Optoma PK-101 Pico Pocket Projector Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — December, 2008

The world of pico projectors just got bigger with the release of Optoma’s PK-101 Pico Pocket Projector. The PK-101 is a pocket-size device measuring only 4.1 x 2.0 x 0.6 inches. Despite its diminutive size, it still houses a DLP engine, a LED lamp, a tiny speaker and a rechargeable battery capable of powering the device for 1.5 hours. However, unlike the 3M pico projector, the PK-101 lacks the VGA port to link it to most laptops. Instead, it has a composite video as well as a bundled iPod kit with a dock connector. The reviewer stated that the PK-101 was able to blow up images to about 8 feet in diagonal at about 12 feet away, though the optimize size is 2-foot image at 3 feet away. During lab tests, it was able to score a measly 10 ANSI lumens and a slightly better contrast ratio of 240:1. Even with a DLP engine, Yellows, the bane of most DLP projectors, looked bright. On the other hand, a series of JPEG images looked grainy and showed interlace flicker. With the technology still fairly new, the PK-101 will cost you. Nonetheless, if you want to watch videos on a screen bigger than your iPod, the Optoma’s PK-101 Pico Pocket Projector is a viable option.
Pros:
-extremely tiny
-can connect directly to iPod

Cons:
-can’t connect to most laptops
-quite dim
