The Dragon NaturallySpeaking has made the arena of speech recognition software its lair for several years, mainly due to the lack of competition and a perennially great piece of software. The latest release, NaturallySpeaking 10, benefits from several new features that make it an even better program. It took the software 20 minutes to install. Once setup is done, The New User Wizard pops up and detects your audio hardware, and instructs you on the positioning of your mic. The reviewer stated that the Dragon's accuracy and speed in transcribing was impressive. For testing, the reviewer read two complex sentences. The Dragon missed three words while Vista’s built-in dictation missed six. Vista showed a delay before producing text while the Dragon was more prompt. Aside from dictation, you can use the Dragon to launch programs as well, such as the Start menu. Nuance also improved the Dragon’s capability to control browser functions, especially in Firefox. The Dragon is specifically tuned to work with a set of a dozen sites, such as Google, Yahoo!, and eBay, to provide more specific search needs. However, entering text with the keyboard while running the Dragon caused some problems. It also slowed down Windows noticeably and the interface looks old. Despite some minor flaws, those who take dictation seriously will benefit from the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10.
