If you are looking for an iPod classic alternative and can’t afford the sub-$400 price tag of the iPod touch, then the new 120GB Microsoft Zune is your best bet. Aside from the glossy fingerprint-prone front and black aluminum back, the new Zune resembles its precursor. It has a vivid 3.2-inch screen and has a thickness of 0.5 inches. The interface is mildly revamped, adding new items on the main screen. It also features Channels that build custom radio stations that you can download to the Zune. Music heard through the excellent built-in FM tuner can be “tagged” for purchase in the Zune Marketplace. However, the reviewer noted that it only works if the station broadcasts RDS or RT+ data. Video quality on the Zune is sharp, clear, and smooth, with good color. Then again, the amount of video offerings found on the Marketplace pales in comparison to iTunes’ offerings. It includes support for audiobooks and games and allows for wireless synching via Wi-Fi. Battery life hasn’t improved at 30 hours for audio and 4 hours of video. Nonetheless, the 120GB Microsoft Zune is an excellent iPod classic alternative and provides more features for the same price.
Pros:
-wireless synching, sharing and purchase
-great music discovery features
-striking interface
-clear screen
Cons:
-short battery life
-fewer video offerings compared to iTunes
