When Windows Live OneCare was first released, many found it to be too buggy and an incomplete security suite. Since then, Microsoft has been working full-time to improve and add more features to it. OneCare 2.5 comes with a broad feature set that includes system maintenance and backup, as well as security tasks. Installation is a breeze, provided that you don’t have any other anti-virus suites running in the background, since it will likely conflict with OneCare. The interface is clean and simple to follow. A handy panel shows your current security status and buttons to start scans. While it does offer backups, they are limited to the documents on your drive, rather than full-disk backups. Also included is a start-time optimizer that lets you identify and turn off startup applications to speed up system performance and reduce boot time with ease. The reviewer stated that virus and spyware scanning took an average amount of time compared with other suites. Virus Bulletin gives OneCare an average score for malware/spyware detection, while AV-Test.org shows Microsoft issuing definition updates a few times a day, compared with several times per hour for Norton. All the same, nontechnical users who want a simple, low-cost, do-it-all solution will find something to love in Microsoft’s OneCare.
