Metageek Wi-Spy 2.4x Reviews

Summary of review published by PC Magazine — May, 2008

The Wi-Spy is a spectrum analyzer that could be used to detect which spots are weak in your wireless network, what kind of signal is interfering with it, and where to place additional wireless hardware to make the network coverage stronger. Version 2.4x uses Chipcon 2.4 GHz radio. The range of the Wi-Spy is greatly maximized when used with an external 2dB mini-antenna. Using the Wi-Spy is as easy as connecting it with a USB port. The only problem comes with the Chanalyzer software’s installation. It will only run on a Windows PC running .net 2.0, and you’ll need to download a newer version from Metageek’s web site. However, once installed, it does work well. The reviewer thinks that Wi-Spy is an excellent purchase given its reasonable price.
Pros:
-Inexpensive
-Directional antenna connected via USB port
-Software easy to use
Cons:
-Software still in beta
-Compatible only with Windows
-5-GHz radio version not available
