LaCie 2big Dual 2TB Reviews

Summary of review published by VideoMaker — September, 2008

Joining the ranks of external drives with huge storage spaces is LaCie’s 2big Dual 2TB RAID. It's a 2-drive RAID, configured with two Hitachi 1TB drives. It includes USB 2.0 and eSATA ports. Continuing the design tradition of LaCie, the reviewer stated that the 2big is a visually attractive device with a case that’s almost all-aluminum, save for the big blue button at its front. The big button changes color depending on the state of the drive: placid blue for a healthy system, angry red for problems or issues. Bundled with the 2big is LaCie’s own 1-click backup software, the Silverkeeper backup software. It features several RAID modes that you can choose using a rotary switch. These modes are Big, JBOD, Fast (or RAID 0) and three Safe modes: Safe100, Safe33 and Safe50. Using the USB 2.0 connection, performance is roughly identical for each mode, yielding 27-29MB/sec sustained transfer rate at a CPU utilization of 3-5%. Using eSATA provides a big performance boost, averaging 87.6MB/sec for Fast mode, 69.5MB/sec for both Big and JBOD and 76.1MB/sec for mirror mode. CPU utilization is a low 0.5 to 1.5%. For a stylish drive that offers flexible RAID configurations, LaCie’s 2big Dual 2TB RAID is a solid choice.

Pros:
-good performance
-good value
-very good design
Cons:
-no quad-interface version yet
