LG GGW-H20L Reviews

Summary of review published by VideoMaker — April, 2008

Instead of waiting on which format is going to come out ahead in the HD wars, LG decided to create the GGW-H20L drive. It can read CD, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc and write CDs, DVD+R(W), DVD-R(W) and BD-R(E), including dual-layer variants of applicable formats. It connects to your system via a SATA connection instead of the old ATA interface. The drive comes with the CyberLink Hi-Def Suite that includes PowerDVD 7.3, a player that claims to handle HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc and the CyberLink Advisor, which informs you whether your system is capable of playing Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD program material, just to name a few. However, the reviewer stated that during testing, both the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc weren’t able to play successfully. After downloading and trying out ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theatre, it solved the HD DVD problem. Burning a whole new Blu-ray Disc and playing it again using TotalMedia Theatre was a success. All in all, while the hardware had a lot going for it, the software was a disappointment, and the reviewer suggested getting the OEM version of GGW-H20L drive and save the extra money for better software.
Pros:
-good hardware
-easy to connect
-easy to keep the firmware updated

Cons:
-mediocre software bundle
