Kaspersky returns to the scene with its latest iteration, the Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. It now comes armed with new antivirus and application-filtering modules. Installing the Kaspersky 2009 took longer than similar security suites, with about 20 minutes in total, including 5 minutes to install and reboot, then 8.5 minutes to download updates, followed by another reboot. The interface is clean and more intuitive than the previous release, though the sheer amount of settings made the reviewer wish for a wizard to guide him through. The biggest feature of Kaspersky 2009 is the Application Filter that assigns every program on your PC to a category: Trusted, Untrusted, Low Restricted, and High Restricted. Categorizing is based on information from Bit9’s 6.5 billionâ€"record Global Software Registry. The E-mail and IM protection against malware is on by default, but the reviewer bemoaned the fact that the filter blocked too many good messages. It also suffers from relatively slow scans and updates, taking 45 minutes to finish a scan that other security suites finished in 25 minutes. Even the update servers seem to be slow or overloaded, plodding along at a slow 4 Mbps over a 12 Mbps broadband connection. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is a good choice for a security suite, as long as you can endure the lengthy install time, slow scanning and quirky IM protection.
Pros:
-excellent virus and spyware protection
-unobtrusive operation
-in-depth application and network filtering
Cons:
-slow to update
-blocks non-spam mails
