Tired of having your HD camcorder run out of power when you most need it? Then you might want to try JVC’s latest Everio release, the GZ-HD40. It is the first dual-format AVCHD/MPEG-2 camcorder from JVC. It can provide up to 50 hours of AVCHD Full HD video recording, all while weighing only 1.2. The new CMOS imaging chip and the optional extended color space of x.v.Color provides the impressive color saturation. It comes with a 10x optical zoom and 200x digital zoom. The camera features digital image stabilization, though the reviewer noted that there are camcorders that offer better performance. Despite the placing of the mic near the lens, the reviewer stated that it was a struggle to hear anything from beyond 5 feet. The GZ-HD40 has three modes that record Full HD 1920x1080 video. Picture quality is very clear and colors were highly saturated and feels very warm. In AVCHD format, users can capture up to 50 hours of video with the EP mode. MPEG-2 offers 10 hours in both FHD and 1440 CBR modes. If you are in the market for an entry-level camcorder, the Everio GZ-HD40 is a solid choice.
