HP’s Photosmart Pro B8850 Photo Printer is the next-generation replacement for the Photosmart 8750 Professional Photo Printer. However, the reviewer stated that it more closely resembled the high-end HP Photosmart Pro B9180. It measures a relatively large 9.5 by 26.5 by 16.9 inches and weighs a hefty 37.7 pounds, which makes finding a spot for your printer a challenge. HP used the ink system of the B9180 which uses eight inks, with a separate cartridge for each color, and has four printheads. Setup is a breeze, though the closed-loop self-calibration, a one-time process, can take as long as 40 minutes. After the calibration, all that remains is to run the automated installation routine. Using a business application suite, the B8850 took a total of 15 minutes 30 seconds to finish. Printing photos clocked in at an average of 1:49 for each 4-by-6 and 3:53 for each 8-by-10. Image quality is great, with photorealistic color, appropriately subtle shading, and impressively smooth gradients. Graphics and text output on photo paper is similarly high-quality. However, the B8850 didn't do a particularly good job on plain paper. Nevertheless, given the price point and the quality of the prints, the Photosmart Pro B8850 Photo Printer is certainly a bargain.
