Injecting something new in the flooded mini-notebook market, Gigabyte introduced the M912V. The M912V features a unique 8.9-inch, swiveling touchscreen. It has a glossy black lid, complete with a modern silver-square inlay pattern. While it may be a bit thicker and heavier than competing mini-notebooks, the reviewer noted that the M912V still fits nicely in a backpack and won’t weigh you down. Keyboard is cramped, reminiscent of the first wave of mini-notebooks. The touchpad looks stylish and the buttons are easy to click. The M912V has the usual ports, with the addition of an ExpressCard/34 slot. The 8.9-inch, 1280 x 768-pixel resolution display looks dull and left colors muted. The resistive touchscreen responded well to both stylus and finger input. However, because of the absence of a digitizer, the system doesn’t distinguish from hovering. Powering the M912V is a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM. Even though the system is running Microsoft’s Windows Vista Home Basic, the reviewer noted that it performed quite well. Battery endurance is subpar, due to the four-cell battery provided. As a tablet, the M912V is the best choice. However, if you’re looking for a mini-notebook, you might want to look at the competition.
