Gateway MC-78030u Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — October, 2008

Deviating from its usual bland laptop designs, Gateway’s MC-78030u is a potential game changer for the manufacturer. Dressed up in a new, attractive chassis, the MC-78030u has a glossy cover and a brushed silver trim on the lid and around the edges. Weighing in at 7.8 pounds, it's a bit too large and heavy for anything but occasional travel. The keyboard is quiet and comfortable, though the size of some keys were sacrificed to make the layout a perfect rectangle. The 16-inch display that features a 16:9 aspect ratio is fairly bright and crisp but has a small range of viewing angles. A bevy of ports surround the MC-78030u including HDMI, an ExpressCard/54 slot, and a 5-in-1 memory card reader. While benchmark scores are below average, the reviewer stated that everyday performance lived up to their standards. Graphics performance scores showed that the MC-78030u is good enough for mainstream gamers. The eight-cell battery lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes - on a par with the category average for battery life for a mainstream notebook. Wireless throughput is slightly below average, delivering 17.1 Mbps and 14.2 Mbps at 15 and 50 feet, respectively. If you're in the market for a stylish laptop and you won’t be moving around too much, the Gateway MC78030u is a good choice.
Pros:
-stylish design
-touch responsive media controls
-bright display
-good battery endurance
Cons:
-heavy
-limited screen movement
-tapered keyboard layout
-no Blu-ray
