The Gateway C-142XL may look like a tablet, but due to its heft and weight, it’s better to consider it as a full-featured notebook with tablet capabilities. Weighing in at 7 pounds, the C-142XL is meant for taking notes while leaning the system against a desk. The reviewer found it quite bulky due to the protruding rubberized, eight-cell battery. The keyboard is comfortable to use and the touchpad is large and responsive. The C-142XL doesn’t lack the usual ports, though all of them are concentrated on the left side, making multiple connections quite difficult. The 14.1-inch display is bright and colorful. The audio on the other hand proved to be a disappointment. Using a resistive (passive) touchscreen, the system responded well with plastic styli for inputs. The components of the C-142XL make it a very capable Vista notebook. Benchmark scores were slightly above the average. Day-to-day productivity chores proved to be a cinch though 3D gaming can be limiting. And because of the 8-cell battery, endurance is quite good. For an all-around notebook with tablet functionality, the $1299 price for the Gateway C-142XL and its features makes it a good choice.
