Garmin expands its nüvi family with the Garmin nüvi 880. It's the first portable GPS product to boast full speech recognition capabilities. The nüvi 880 measures 3.1 by 4.9 by 0.7 inches and is 0.7-inch thick. It carries two forward-facing speakers and a microSD card slot. The front is dominated by a 4.3-inch, 480-by-272-pixel, WQVGA resolution screen. The user interface is identical to other nüvi products, the only difference is the addition of speech recognition. Aside from voice-activated commands, the nüvi 880 can also be controlled using the touchscreen. Testing the speech recognition abilities, the reviewer stated that the device is right on the money. Even commands spoken in a conversational manner was enough for the nüvi 880 to bring up the correct menus. However, the Page Down command takes a lot more time than successive screen taps. Speech recognition also gives you direct access to the Main Menu or the Map View screen from anywhere within the menu structure. While the nüvi 880 is priced at the very top end of the GPS market, people with the cash will surely find it an excellent driving accessory.
