G-Technology G-DRIVE mini Reviews

Summary of review published by VideoMaker — August, 2008

In the ever-growing arena of external hard drives, it takes either a lot of storage space or a rock bottom price just for a product to get noticed. G-Technology decided to amp up their storage space with the new 500GB G-DRIVE mini. It's a triple-interface drive - FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0. It can be powered via FireWire but not USB, and comes pre-formatted for journaled HFS Plus, the primary disk format for Mac OS. Underneath the hood is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K500-series drive. Benchmark tests showed that using the FireWire 400, the drive registers an average of 38.5MB/sec transfer rate, with a maximum of 39.5MB/sec. It has an access time of of 19.1ms and CPU utilization of 3.3%. As part of the bundle, it comes with a full complement of cables - FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and USB. Overall, despite the lack of a 5V power supply so that the drive could work over USB, the G-DRIVE mini hard drive is the one to get when you find yourself constantly working on the road.
Pros:
-small
-Mac OS ready
-speedy
Cons:
-expensive
-can’t be powered by USB
