Environment preservation and data backups may seem to be two unconnected ideas, but Fabrik brings them together through the SimpleTech (re)drive. The (re)drive features an environment-friendly design using bamboo covers on the top and at the bottom, as well as recycled aluminum. However, the reviewer noted that this makes for a harsh visual clash between the old and new. It looks raw on one hand, and on the other, it looks like it was packaged and shipped out before the design was completed. Performance-wise, the (re)drive took 3 minutes and 53 seconds to write a 4.97GB folder of mixed media, translating to a rate of 21.0 MBps. It transferred the same folder within 4 minutes and 22 seconds, or 19.5 MBps. The (re)drive includes only one connection port (USB) and lacks the faster eSATA and FireWire 800 connections, so you’ll have to make do with those transfer rates. Fabrik’s Local Backup comes pre-installed in the drive. It allows you to make full or incremental backups and offers 128-bit SSL encryption. If you are in the market for a drive that offers pretty good write speed and would like to help nature at the same time, you might want to check out the Fabrik’s SimpleTech (re)drive.
