Giving wireless capability to any compatible digital camera, the Eye-Fi is truly an innovation. The newest release, the Eye-Fi Explore, retains the winning formula of the original while fixing some of its flaws. Like the original Eye-Fi, the Explore is a 2GB SD Card that enables cameras to transmit photos via Wi-Fi. Photos can be sent wirelessly to your computer or to your favorite photo-sharing site. Setting it up is a cinch, thanks to the on-screen wizard that installs the Eye-Fi Manager software on your computer. Aside from turning your camera into a Wi-Fi device, Eye-Fi also gives it geotagging capability which is powered by Skyhook Wireless. However, in order to take advantage of geotagging, you must be within 90 feet of a hotspot mapped by Skyhook. When tested with Google Earth and Picasa, the reviewer noted that almost all of the geotagged pictures appeared in their exact locations on the map. Transfer speed has improved as well, taking an average of 1 minute and 51 seconds per image. Unlike the original, the Explore allows you to connect on public Wi-Fi connections powered by Wayport to transfer your pictures. With the Eye-Fi Explore, uploading your images has never been easier.
