Dell decided to go all-out on its gaming rig, the new Dell XPS M1730. Despite the weight and size of the rig, the M1730 is one mean machine. It comes with a 17-inch display and a flashy LED light to show everyone just how cool your rig is. Colored lights flash out through the grills of the front speakers and from underneath the keyboard and numeric keypad. This light show can be controlled using Dell’s Quickset software. The reviewer stated that the feature set of the M1730 is rock solid, though it loses points with its DVI-out connector instead of HDMI. Powered by 2.8-GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000, it scored well on the SYSmark 2007 Preview, though it fell behind the Alienware by 6 percent. Scores on CineBench R10 and Photoshop tests, on the other hand, were as impressive as those of the Alienware. The dedication of the M1730 to gamers is easily seen through the built-in PhysX card from Ageia - a first for a laptop. It also comes with dual nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX graphics cards (in an SLI configuration). Battery life, on the other hand, is disappointing, lasting only 1 hour 30 minutes on MobileMark 2007. Nonetheless, the combination of the PhysX card and the SLI nVidia graphics cards gives the Dell XPS M1730 the edge in the gaming laptop arena.
