LED projectors have been around since 2005. While it is a groundbreaking product, it had the reputation of being barely brighter than a lit match. Now, Dell releases its own version of a LED projector that’s bright enough for special situations. The Dell M109S is very small, measuring only 4.1 x 3.6 x 1.5 inches. It has a glossy black exterior that breaks only to give way to a few controls and connectors. It doesn’t have any remote control, so controlling the M109S is done through the membrane buttons that the reviewer noted to be hard to use. Dell is open to the fact that it is capable of only 50 ANSI lumens of brightness. It is two orders of magnitude lower than the brightness offered by larger projectors, though it is bright enough for some limited applications. Tests showed that the M109S is actually brighter than advertised, getting 59 ANSI lumens. However, contrast ratio is only 125:1. It has a nonstandard native resolution of 858 x 600 which means that setting a laptop to the nearest matching SVGA resolution still won’t match up exactly with this projector. While it does get high marks for portability, the limited luminosity of the Dell M109S might be the deal breaker for some.
