D-Link RangeBooster N Dual-Band DIR-628 Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — July, 2008

For those in search of a good 802.11n router that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, the D-Link RangeBooster N Dual-Band DIR-628 might just appeal to you. It has a small footprint of 8 x 5 inches and the reversed SMA antennas are replaceable for higher-powered ones. If you’re concerned about security, it offers the latest WPA and WPA2 encryption features. However, because of its budget nature, the DIR-628 foregoes some of the bells and whistles, such as having only 2 antennas instead of 3, and no Gigabit Ethernet port. Set up took only 2 minutes, thanks to the quick installer CD. The DIR-628 lets you connect over the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz band at the same time. However, the reviewer noted that tests showed the DIR-628 topping out at only 88 Mbps in the 2.4-GHz band. In the 5-GHz band, speeds maxed out at about 112 Mbps from 5 feet. Coverage, while not spectacular, is acceptable. The DIR-628 connected up to 400 feet in the 2.4-GHz band, and 300 feet in the 5-GHz band. If you are on a really tight budget and can live with the somewhat slower speeds, the D-Link RangeBooster N Dual-Band DIR-628 is a good option.
Pros:
-Dual-Band for a low price
-Quick and painless setup
-Supports WPA and WPA2
Cons:
-No Gigabit Ethernet ports
-2 Antennas only
