Creative Labs Zen X-Fi Reviews

Summary of review published by Laptop Magazine — September, 2008

Music lovers now have more reason to be glad as their newest audio-enhancing technologies have finally found their way into one of Creative’s media player: the Creative Zen X-Fi. It measures 3.3 x 2.2 x 0.5 inches and weighs 2.5 ounces. On the device’s face is a 2.5-inch display and the unique but frustrating to use 9-button layout. The reviewer noted that all in all, the Zen X-Fi sports 13 buttons, making it difficult to operate by touch. To improve listening experience, it contains two technologies: X-Fi Crystalizer and X-Fi Expand. The reviewer noted that the Crystallizer slightly improved to audio tracks. The X-Fi Expand also did change the audio quality - but for the worse. The music sounded muddy when activated, even with a pair of good headphones. Listening through the bundled EP-830 earbuds was pleasant, providing crisp, loud, and nicely replicated low-end sounds. The Zen X-Fi can utilize 802.11b/g Wi-Fi by letting the user stream and download music and videos from a networked computer. During testing, the reviewer stated that battery life was close to 6 hours. For excellent sound quality at a compelling price, the Creative Zen X-Fi is a good media player.
Pros:
-crisp sound
-comes with SD card slot
-comfortable earbuds
-supports audiobooks
Cons:
-frustrating controls
-no predictive text during IM
-non-JPEG files need to be transcoded
