Cowon’s known for churning out innovative portable media players, such as their latest offering, the Cowon S9. It measures 4.1 x 2.2 x 0.5 inches and weighs a feather-light 2.7 ounces - smaller and lighter than the iPod touch 2G. The controls are located at the top of the player and a small divider helps the user determine which button is which. Majority of the front of the S9 is occupied by a sharp 3.3-inch (480 x 272-pixel resolution), widescreen AMOLED display that utilizes a capacitive touchscreen. Just like previous Cowon releases, the S9 supports a plethora of A/V formats and codecs. However, clearly missing is support for Fairplay DRM or the AAC format. Thanks to the new JetEffect 2.0 audio enhancement and filtering technology, audio quality was impeccable. The highs and lows were nicely separated, and the music was crisp. Downloaded movies and home videos looked clear and colorful, and the G-sensor accelerometer re-orients the display when it is turned sideways. Photos looked bright, colorful and well detailed, though it only supports JPEG files. The S9 comes with Cowon MediaCenter-JetAudio Basic VX software that converts your videos and JetCast software that turns you into an Internet DJ. Battery life is rated at 55 hours of audio playback and 11 hours of video playback. If you can live without over-the-air downloads, multi-touch capability and an application store, the Cowon S9 is a solid player.
