What do you call a player with a futuristic design that tries to make you smarter and is worth $399? It can only be the MC Square X1. Through the use of audio and visual cues, the X1 tries improve memory, enhance concentration, and promote better sleeping patterns by using non-intrusive beeping patterns. In short, the MC Square X1 tries to make you “smarter.” The device is made up of 2 parts: a digital audio player and a visor. The device is comfortable but the design is quite confusing. A small display, a lot of cords hanging and the touch-sensitive keys jam-packed in the unit make the player difficult to use. The reviewer stated that claims such as “it makes you smarter” cannot be easily verified. Tested using a video game to test memory improvements, the results weren’t conclusive. As for the relaxation part, the reviewer said that a $20 CD can do the job just as well and because the MC Square X1 only has 512MB of internal storage, it would be far better to use an iPod, fill it with soothing sounds, than to struggle with the Square X1 unit.
