Canon Vixia HV30 Reviews

Summary of review published by VideoMaker — October, 2008

The Canon Vixia HV30 HDV is one of those camcorders that decided to stick to using mini DV tapes. An update of last year’s HV20, the HV30 is a good camera that captures good images for its category. The body of the camera looks tidy. Most of the controls are in their usual positions. The 2.7" LCD display flips out as usual and has good color and improved visibility. The video quality of the HV30 is the biggest selling point of the camera, thanks to the Digic DV II processor technology. The camera’s clarity and resolution are very pleasing to the eye. The reviewer stated that the picture quality is comparable or superior to just about any camera in this price range. In low-light situations, visual noise started appearing, though the colors don't wash out as much as in other cameras. It has several compelling features, such as the Instant Autofocus and the Focus Assist button on the LCD that magnifies the image to 2x in the display, not the tape, for that sharp focus. The menu system, despite the learning curve, is flexible and a joy to use. While there is not much to compel an HD20 user to upgrade, beginners looking for a camera to learn with and pros looking for a second camera would like the control and flexibility offered by the Canon Vixia HV30 HDV.
Pros:
-very good image quality
-many manual controls
-good price point
Cons:

-not very ergonomic
-vibration picked by the mic

Canon’s HV20 just got an upgrade in the form of the new MiniDV-based Vixia HV30. It still houses the same 3-megapixel CMOS sensor as the HV20 which simply means excellent video. The HV30’s on-screen menu is clear and the button layout is excellent. The reviewer stated that the LCD is easy to read even in bright sunlight. It also offers a full-sized HDMI connector which allows you to connect the camera easily without the need for special cables. The HV30 performed well during tests, producing fantastic videos with balanced colors and sharp details. The reviewer noted that low lights produced some noise and focus troubles, but the manual focus wheel on the left side of the lens solves them. With the 2 new progressive modes, there is a video mode for every shooter. Audio capture was robust and crisp while the battery life is good, lasting for about 80 minutes of recording time. If you are looking for a great camera and is not bothered by the fact that it shoots on tape, the Canon HV30 is an excellent choice.
Pros:
-Video capture is excellent
-Intuitive design
-Full-sized HDMI connector
-MiniDV compatible with most editing suite
Cons:
-Low light focus problems
-Low light noise problems
