By removing the options to record on MiniDV or in integrated hard drives, Canon was able to shrink the size of its new Vixia HF100 to become one of the lightest and most portable camcorders on the market today. It utilizes the AVCHD format and records full-frame (1920 x 1080) HD video directly on high-capacity SD memory cards. The reviewer noted that while the HF100 is light, its bulk is enough to keep it stable when in use. Videos taken with the HF100 had gorgeous colors and were very detailed, up close or even at a distance. There were instances of jagged lines and edges in high-motion scenes but the overall clarity was adequate. Audio recording was good as well and the wind filtered worked as it should. There is a small caveat, however. The HF100 does not come with an SDHC memory card: you have to buy one separately. A 16GB SDHC memory card allows for 6 hours of recording in long play and 2 hours in HQ mode. The battery allows an hour of recording per charge. If you’re in the market for small camcorders, the Vixia HF100 with its size and features is worthy of consideration.
