Canon Powershot SD790 IS Reviews

Summary of review published by PC Magazine — July, 2008

Canon’s ever-expanding line of excellent Digital ELPHs gets a new addition in the form of Canon PowerShot SD790 IS. The SD790 IS is the latest high-end pocket shooter that features a slick, pocket-size design, a new control wheel, and motion-detection technology. It sports a simple, silvery, boxlike design and weighs 6.4 ounces with battery and SD card. The SD790 includes a new control wheel. As opposed to previous control wheels that were touch sensitive, it now physically turns. At the back of the camera is a 3-inch LCD. At 10 megapixels, it produces extremely high-quality images. Daylight shots were outstanding, with near-perfect contrast and vivid color. Low-light shots were equally impressive, producing images with very little noise at ISO 800. To avoid washed out faces, Canon has improved the automatic white-balance mode to instead focus on a subject's face. It is also fast, taking only 1.8 seconds to power up and take a shot while shutter lag is at a mere 0.4 seconds. It has the ability to record movies at 640-by-480 at 30 frames per second. Video quality is respectable, and you can zoom in and out while shooting. Overall, the SD790 IS offers superior image quality.
Pros:
-large 3-inch LCD
-new click-wheel control
-excellent images even at high ISO

Cons:
- new click-wheel control takes getting used to
-wide-angle lens not wide enough
-slightly underexposed flash shots
