Canon EOS Rebel XSi Reviews
Summary of review published by PC Magazine — November, 2008
Canon’s EOS Rebel line just keeps getting better and better. The latest iteration, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi comes in an all black and all silver design sans the silver trim from previous models. It measures 3.8 by 5.1 by 2.4 inches without lens and weighs 475g. The XSi is compatible with more than 60 Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S series. The XSi’s 12.2-MP is a bump from the pixel count of the 10-MP XTi. It has a new Live View system that accurately frames shots with the LCD instead of having to look through the viewfinder. The bright display is now larger at 3 inches and 230,000 pixels. The menu system is just as thorough as the one on previous Rebel models. The reviewer stated that the XSi also incorporates a dust reduction system, which uses a vibrating filter to shake dust away from the camera's sensor. The standard kit lens that came with the unit proved to be exquisite, producing images with well balanced and rich colors and sharp focus. Night shots without flash were reasonably noise-free. Canon has switched from CompactFlash (CF) to SD card compatibility, giving it up to 32GB of storage. The XSi is relatively fast, with excellent boot and recycle times of 0.6 and 0.8 seconds, respectively. The Canon EOS Rebel XSi provides an excellent combination of price and performance.
Pros:
-excellent resolution
-superb image quality
-bigger LCD
-comes with Live View
Cons:
-ISO only up to 1600
-RAW format not compatible with some image-editing programs

After failing to impress the photography market twice, Canon finally made the right combinations with its latest update to the original Rebel Digital SLR with the new 12.2-megapixel EOS Rebel XSi. The newest member of the Rebel line is taller and wider than the previous models. It is also more ergonomic than its predecessors. It gets an upgraded 3-inch LCD screen, 230,000 pixels of resolution and a 170-degree viewing angle. While the standard lens kit that comes with the XSi is decent, the reviewer noted that it would be better if it comes with a higher-quality Canon lens with a faster aperture for low light. Live View was much improved but still very difficult to access. One of the selling points of the new XSi is the Digic III processor, making it the fastest entry-level digital SLR according to the reviewer. While it only offers up to ISO 1600, colors from outdoor shots were faithful to the original, though the reviewer noted that it looked punchy. There was also some excessive red in skin tones. With its comfortable design, speedy performance and improvements in image quality, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi is an excellent choice for an entry-level DSLR.
Pros:
-Better design
-Larger LCD
-Fastest overall speed in its class
-Excellent image quality
Cons:
-Only up to ISO 1600
-Overly red skin tones
-Average lens kit
-Live View hard to access
