Buffalo’s combination of speed, size and flexibility has catapulted the DriveStation Combo 4 into the top of the 1TB category. The 3.2-pound DriveStation Combo 4 was designed with a silver, brushed-metal body, almost perfectly matching the color scheme of a MacBook Pro. Located at the rear is the power switch, along with the USB 2.0, FireWire 400, two FireWire 800 ports, and eSATA connections. Using the USB 2.0 port, it took 4 minutes and 7 seconds to transfer a 5GB folder of mixed media. Read speed is an excellent 22.2 MBps. The FireWire 400 write speed clocked in at 15.9-MBps while the read speed is at 26.5-MBps. The FireWire 800, while uncommon, produced an incredible read and write speeds of 49.7 MBps and 40.3 MBp. But for the best all-around performance, the reviewer suggests you take advantage of the 37.9-MBps read and 36.8-MBps write speeds using the eSATA connection. For Windows users, bundled software includes Memeo’s AutoBackup and SecureLockWare that features 256-bit AES encryption. Mac users get the bundled Memeo LifeAgent software. There are cheaper alternatives in the market, but the Buffalo DriveStation Combo 4’s features make it the best choice for a 1TB storage drive.

Pros:
-fast read and write speeds
-supports USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA connections.
-has file encryption software
-Windows and Mac compatible
Cons:
-TurboUSB didn’t improve write speed noticeably
