Small handheld camcorders have become ubiquitous in the last few years, with advances in image quality and cheaper costs. Nevertheless, their main asset â€" portability â€" means they lack mass, and with it, stability. The tiniest hand movement can affect the shot. Manufacturers have come up with in-camera image stabilizers to minimize the effects of jitter. Another way is thru a simple accessory called Levelcam, a lightweight, hard-plastic platform on which to mount your small camera. Levelcam spreads the camera’s mass, great for stabilizing horizontal roll. It also gives you a wider grip to maintain smooth shots. The reviewer suggests using Levelcam at chest level and below. He also recommends using it for shooting extreme sports and other fast action sequences. It can’t totally replace complex counter-weighted and gimbaled stabilizers, but it does give fairly good results.
