BBP Software SmartHiker Reviews

Summary of review published by Pocket PC — September, 2005 (page 34)

SmartHiker is a clever Smartphone application for hikers and trekkers. It provides all the basic information that hikers need, including a compass heading, your current speed, the coordinates of your current position, as well as your average speed. The best thing about this program is that keeps all this information handy and within access in just one display screen. Users from the UK can access OSGB grid reference for easy lookup on a map or government survey. Despite its many decent features, the reviewer found the compass to be a little confusing - a compass face would’ve been more intuitive than a degree indicator. Even directional headings such as N, S, NW, etc. would’ve been more helpful. However, the developers are working on several improvements for SmartHiker. Their newer versions might include total hiked distance, current altitude, total altitude, sunset and sunrise times (location dependent), as well as real time weather reports.
Pros:
-All the basic information is shown in one screen
-OSGB grid reference available for UK users
Cons:
-Degree bearing compass is counter-intuitive
