The new iPhone 3G is not a huge physical upgrade over the original iPhone. Instead, it tries to correct the major weaknesses of the older release: a slow internet connection and poor phone call quality. The iPhone 3G still looks, feels and acts like the original iPhone. You still get the big touch screen, the 3.5-inch display and the plastic back that's a fingerprint magnet. You get the same stock iPhone applications but with the addition of the dedicated buttons for Contacts and the App store. It is available in 8GB (black) and 16GB (black and white) sizes. Battery life is good, powering the iPhone for 5 hours, 43 minutes of talk time. The 3G's earpiece and speakerphone are louder than the original iPhone and the background hiss is gone. While you can easily pair it with a Bluetooth headset, stereo Bluetooth is still not supported. The other major upgrade is the Internet connection. The iPhone 3G uses HSDPA 3.6, AT&T's fastest download network. It also has a built-in and bonafide GPS that works well. The App Store is one major break for users, as it provides a single source for applications that are relatively safe to install. While being far from perfect, the iPhone 3G is still an excellent smartphone.
